    Fire Service Leadership Seminar
    • What: A fire service leadership seminar presented by Battalion Chief Matt Tobia of the Anne Arundel County, MD Fire Department. • When: Saturday, October 25, 2008 8:30am to 4:30pm • Where: Gorham Middle School, 106 Weeks Road, Gorham • Cost: $50.00 per student includes seminar, coffee and pastries in the morning and Lunch. • Registration Deadline: Friday, October 17, 2008 (substitutions only after deadline) About the Program and Presenter: Watch Your Step... or how to avoid stepping on a landmine. In reality, commanding a fire or leading a company into battle is relatively easy when compared to the extreme challenge of leading people in between calls. Too often in an effort to traverse the mine field of leadership, officers end up stepping on the landmines that result in bad outcomes for all involved. The purpose of this program is to assist officers of all ranks in locating and avoiding the landmines that can interfere with successful leadership. Topics such as defining expectations, doing the hard right, and avoiding your own ego will be discussed in an interactive format. Students will have the chance to share success stories and lessons learned from previous encounters with explosive devices. Learn how to disarm them before they explode! Matthew Tobia is a Battalion Chief with the Anne Arundel County, MD Fire Department, a metropolitan combination Fire / Rescue / EMS agency in Suburban Baltimore, MD. With 20 years of diverse experience, Chief Tobia is currently working as the Executive Officer to the Fire Chief and Public Information Officer for the Department. Chief Tobia holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland and is a nationally certified Fire Officer IV and Instructor II. He teaches extensively throughout the United States, and has served as an Adjunct Instructor at the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. He has served on curriculum development teams at the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute for Fire Officer Certification programs, and has also been actively involved in program development in Pennsylvania for Rapid Intervention, Fire Fighter Survival, and Trench Rescue. Chief Tobia is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors on the Safety, Health, and Survival Section. He has authored several articles addressing leadership and safety for such fire service publications as Fire Chief and Firehouse magazines. Chief Tobia is active in supporting the families of fallen firefighters, serving as the family escort coordinator at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. In addition, Matt is a counselor at the Mid Atlantic Burn Camp for children who are survivors of burn injuries. Matt resides in Crofton, Maryland with his wife Jeanne and two children, Hanna and Doc.
