Lightning Sets Off Freeport Fire
A lightning strike set off a fire in Freeport Saturday, according to the town's fire chief.
Chief Darrel Fournier says his crews were called to 91 Webster Road in the afternoon for a a report of a fire. Chief Fournier says the lightning hit the roof of the home and traveled to the electrical panel in the basement, setting off some sort of fire or explosion. Flames quickly spread throughout the basement.
The power was knocked out, and the chief says because of that, the woman inside the home had to run to a neighbor's house to call for help, causing a slight delay in response.
In addition to Freeport, crews from three towns responded to the fire and got the flames knocked down quickly. No one was hurt.
The chief says damage is estimated to be at $50,000.
