FREEPORT — A Freeport High School senior was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston this morning as a result of a one-vehicle accident on Staples Point Road on Friday night.

A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter took James Hunneman, 18, from the accident scene after he was extricated from a 2002 Ford that had gone off the road and struck a tree. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male from Freeport.

The vehicle was headed south on the road when it hit a sharp curve near Redding Lane. The driver lost control of the Ford, hit the brakes and it skidded across the roadway and hit a tree, said Freeport Police Chief Gerald Schofield.

Freeport Fire and Rescue had to cut the roof off the vehicle to remove Hunneman from the Ford after the accident, which was reported at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The driver told police his legs hurt following the crash and was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Schofield said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, but speed and driver inexperience may have been. Police are still investigating the accident and he said charges could be filed in the case.

The vehicle had about $8,000 damage.

Hunneman plays for the Freeport varsity boys la-crosse team. He also played boys soccer and skied for the Falcons.

Due to the accident, the school's boys lacrosse game against York at North Yar-mouth Academy on Saturday was postponed along with baseball and softball games against Wells and the girls lacrosse match at Sanford. No makeup dates have been announced.
